Dear parishioners and friends,
We are pleased with your donations for the priests' pension fund for the diocese. Your generosity is much appreciated and we hope that you will continue your support. With 20 priests living on pension (and social benefits), this is a heavy burden for the diocese. A pensioner thanks you.
Fr. Tom VIlleneuve
Cordial greetings to each and every one of you!
I am a diocesan priest who retired at the end of June 2014. A pension plan is quite important for a retiree. And as such, I do benefit from the Priests' Pension Fund each month. It does help when I add it to the Old Age Security and the Canada Pension Fund benefits. I do appreciate the diocesan pension. It helps me to live a decent retirement. Thanks to the generous response of many faithful members of our Diocese on the occasion of the annual collection for the Priests' Pension Fund, our Fund has grown. We need to keep it as strong as possible. I do wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to all who have contributed to our annual collection. Their generosity has made a difference and has rendered a tremendous service to our priests who do receive the pension.
I pray for the Lord's blessing upon each one of them.
Yours in Christ,
Msgr. Réjean G. Lebrun, P.H.
The priests’ pension plan annual collection will take place Sunday November 6. Last year’s collection generated $55,620. We are very appreciative of your concern for our welfare. You may recall that when we began seeking your help, the monthly pension was at $750. The number of retired priests outnumber the active priests by a ratio of almost 2 to 1.
In July of 2014, we were able to raise the pension to $800 per month. Our target is to reach $1,100 and we had hoped to implement another adjustment to $875 per month effective July 1 of 2016. However, because of continued falling interest rates plus the longevity of our members (people are living longer therefore more money is required to pay the monthly pension), we have had to postpone increasing the monthly pension this year. We need to save enough to be able to pay the pension at the current $800 per month for all members for the whole of their retirement before we can consider a change. This will likely take a few years.
We thank you for your consideration and generosity. Should you have any questions, please contact Deacon Pierre Aubé at (613) 933-1138, extension 25, or Father Daniel Van Delst at (613) 932-9226.
