On Sunday, April 27th, Pope Francis will preside at the canonizations of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII. To mark this historic event, Bishop Marcel Damphousse has chosen Pope John Paul II as his April movie pick. Pope John Paul II will run from April 4th to 10th at the Port Theatre.
This epic movie, starring Academy Award winning actor John Voight and Academy nominated actor James Cromwell, follows the life of Karol Wojtyla, from his youth in Poland through his final days in Rome. Filmed on location in Krakow, Poland and Rome, this movie brings the amazing story of Karol Wojtyla up close and personal, from his struggles in Nazi-occupied Poland to his dealings with the Russians and their desire to turn his beloved homeland into a godless society; from his education in the underground seminary to his election, at the age of 58, as the first non-Italian pope in 455 years.
Bishop Marcel will introduce the movie on opening night, April 4th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Father Kevin Maloney, who is leading a group to Rome for the canonization, will introduce the Monday Matinée at 2:00 p.m. on April 10th.
