Appointment of Bishop Damphousse to Sault Ste. Marie

(Cornwall, Ontario)--His Holiness Pope Francis today named the Most Reverend Marcel Damphousse as Bishop of Sault Ste Marie to replace the Most Revered Jean-Louis Plouffe who had offered his resignation after turning 75 years old, as stipulated by Canon Law. At the time of his appointment, Bishop Damphousse was Bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall.
Bishop Damphousse was born on March 19, 1963 in Saint-Joseph, Manitoba and ordained a priest on June 28, 1991 for the Archdiocese of Saint-Boniface. On June 28, 2012, he was appointed the eight Bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall.
Bishop Marcel earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology in 1984 at the University College of Saint Boniface, followed by a Bachelor's degree in Theology in 1989 from Saint Paul University, Ottawa. In 2002 he received a Licentiate in Spiritual Theology from the Teresianum, a Carmelite Pontifical Theological Faculty in Rome. For a number of years, Bishop Damphousse taught at the Manitoba Catholic School of Evangelization, and was Diocesan Vocations Director for twelve years. He was Rector of the Saint-Boniface Cathedral in Manitoba when he was appointed to Alexandria-Cornwall.
Bishop Damphousse is currently the State Chaplain of Ontario for the Knights of Columbus. He is also a member of the executive of the ACBO representing the French speaking bishops as well as a member of the ACBO’s Education Commission. In addition, he is the liaison bishop for the Association franco-ontarienne des conseils scolaires catholiques (AFOCSC) and bishop ponens for the Société catholique de la Bible (SOCABI).
Bishop Damphousse must take up his new pastoral office within the next two months. Meanwhile, he remains administrator of the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall. The inauguration of his pastoral ministry in Sault Ste. Marie will take place on January 13, 2016.
To date, Rome has not named a replacement for Bishop Marcel.
