November 29, 2016
Immediately following the closing of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, the Holy See released on November 21, 2016, the Apostolic Letter of Pope Francis entitled
Mercy and Misery
In his letter, the Holy Father has established the
World Day of the Poor
which will be celebrated annually throughout the Church on the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. Reflecting the experience of the Jubilee for Socially Excluded People this past November 13, the World Day is to "help communities and each of the baptized to reflect on how poverty is at the very heart of the Gospel and that, as long as Lazarus lies at the door of our homes (cf. Lk 16:19-21), there can be no justice or social peace," Pope Francis has written. In his Apostolic Letter he points out that "this Day will also represent a genuine form of new evangelization (cf. Mt 11:5) which can renew the face of the Church as She perseveres in her perennial activity of pastoral conversion and witness to mercy."
